CHAPTER 5

-JACE-

I

looked at the large stone estate where I had grown up and all the good memories of my childhood came flooding back. The house had been passed down throughout the generations, so there were memories of my grandfather and even great grandfather here. The memories of Jamie, father, and I playing touch football in the front yard, the parties Jamie and I would have when our parents were out of town, and Jenny sneaking out in the middle of the night. This place always had managed to bring me comfort, but now it only brought a sense of betrayal.

I had taken an earlier flight into New York, giving Carol specific instructions not to let anyone know of my flight plans. Blake and I met once I landed; to confirm that what he had found was true. I wanted to give my family the benefit of the doubt, but once the evidence was sitting in front of me there was no refuting it. I sat for hours rereading, the evidence Blake had collected, desperately trying to wrap my head around what was transpiring. It was incredulous that my family would attempt to do this to me, and it ripped at my heart. Family was supposed to have your back without question and the fact that this wasn’t the case with mine would take some adjustment. My thoughts immediately went to Makena. How had she managed to live alone for so long? I’d only felt like this for a few hours, and it already felt like it was too much to bear.

When my driver came to a stop at the front of the house, the front door opened. My mother, Mary Sinclair, stepped out and I genuinely smiled for the first time since I had landed in New York. She resembled the older version of Allie from the movie The Notebook since she’d stopped dying her hair. She wore a white V-neck tunic and black capris with readers sitting atop her head. I wrapped her in a tight embrace when she reached me. I felt horrible for having not reached out to her more since my move. Between work, the Rebecca situation, and spending time with Makena, I hadn’t had much time for anything else.

“How’s my only girl doing?” I asked.

“It is astounding that statement is still true, Jace. I need grandbabies. I’ve almost given up on Jamie and Jenny. You’re my last hope before I’m too old to enjoy them,” she complained.

“Actually, I’ve met someone. An astonishing woman.”

My mother stepped back and regarded me closely.

“Jace Randolph Sinclair, is that a twinkle I see in your eyes?” She smiled and placed a hand over her heart. I laughed at her dramatics.

“Possibly. She makes me happy. She’s who I’ve been searching for, for all these years.”

“Oh, Jace, honey,” she wiped the corner of her eyes. “I have to admit that I was worried about you when you and Rebecca separated. I thought you two were perfect together. I always thought you would work things out with her.
